Fashion accessory- folded clutch bag

Hello,

Can you believe that July is here already?! I think to me June was the shortest month ever! Don't you think?
Time flies incredibly fast!
And tomorrow/ this early morning I will be going away on my long annual holiday to Poland to see my family!
I am incredibly excited!^_^

I have a few things to share with you that I worked on over past couple weeks.

In this post I would like to show you my holiday clutch bag.
I made it specially for my holiday.
It's small so it won't add any extra weight to my hand luggage but at the same time my travel documents as well as my mobile, music, lip balm and some cash would fit too!^_^

And it's so sweet too!

Time to carve some rubber stamps!

Happy Monday evening!

I have definitely fallen in love with hand printing.
In the past few days I have been carving rubber stamps and I couldn't stop! ^_^
The whole process- from carving to stamping is much easier and more enjoyable than carving linoleum.
Stamped impressions on fabrics look more precise too.
The rubber doesn't crumble or break and therefore allows you to carve in smaller details, it's so soft too. When I carved lino stamps I cut myself a few time cause it was so hard..
Rubber blocks are a bit more expensive but for what you get it's worth it!

Ok now it's time to share some for the results!^_^

My Red Dress

Hello,

I hope you've had a fantastic and relaxing weekend!

A while ago back in cold spring I made a pretty red dress for myself.. Recently we have been having a really nice weather over here in Edinburgh and so I managed to wear it outside. The sun was shining so brightly one day and I walked around town showing off my pretty red dress!^_^

Jersey- my favourite fabric

Good evening!

I had been experimenting with jersey fabric for a while with mostly not too goo results. That's all in the past now, I seem to finally got it right and sewing knit fabrics is no longer a nightmare! Yupi!
I am so so happy!
The trick is to use a right needle, right foot and a right stitch.
What works for me is- STRETCH NEEDLE, WALKING FOOT (luckily my Bernina machine came with that one ^_^), GOOD QUALITY POLYESTER THREAD and NARROW ZIGZAG STITCH- that gives that extra strength so needed in knit/ stretch fabrics!
I've heard of a twin needle solution for the strength too but I have not tried it.
For a tight pencil skirt - which also doesn't have any zipper-  strong stitches definitely help and the zigzag stitch did a great job!

I also made a bustier top in a beautiful turquoise colour. These two garments seemed to go really nice together, don't you think?

Jersey is most definitely my favourite fabric. It feels super soft on my skin and I love how the garment possibilities vary from close fitting (very often without even a need for a fastening as this is a stretchy fabric -which is so awesome!) to beautifully draped lose skirts/ dresses etc. I cant wait to sew more with it!^_^

Fashion and Screen Printing

How have you been???
I don't seem to be able to stop printing! And recently I've decided to take my printing adventure to the next level- designing a fashion garment, printing on the cut out fabric panels before finally sewing them together. The outcome was very pleasing to my eyes! One more skirt to wear! ^_^

Below I am sharing the process and the final garment with you guys!




Drawing on the freezer paper and the cutting out the shapes out.

 I've treated myself to a new (and much bigger than the one I made myself a while ago) screen frame which is of a perfect size to print on fashion garments.

Applying textile paint..

First colour applied. I'm letting it dry a bit before peeling off the paper. And once the ink has dried completely I will fix it permanently with a hot iron. 

Once the black print dried I applied a second colour- which was metallic (or as they are called- opaque) silver.

And then finally the remaining step was to sew the skirt...

Block Printing - how to

Hello and good evening! ^_^

Another week passed and with it more experimenting with hand printing on fabrics.
This time I was trying block printing.

Block printing is one of the oldest way of printing.
Carving your own stamps is a lot of fun too! 
A raised surface of the carved design that gets coated with ink, is transferred onto another material. 
Images printed using carved stamps and blocks turn out totally different than those done using screen printing method. They have very distinctive look, the edges are not crisp and each print differs from the previous one, some tend to be softer than others.


You will need:
-linoleum block
-textile ink
-various scraps of fabrics (previously washed and ironed)
- soft - lead pencil
-lino carving tools- use a U blade for cutting away large areas and a V blade for cutting details
-brayer- for applying ink

 I drew my design with a pencil directly onto a small linoleum sheet ( you can draw on a piece of paper first using soft- lead pencil and then transfer onto the lino using bone folder or what I also tried  -a spoon).

 
This is a great book full of inspirational designs^_^

 
The fun part starts here. Carving away what we don't want to be stamped- basically the raised surface that remains will be what gets transferred onto fabrics.

I am sorry I forgot to take a picture of the carving process of that same flower I used for printing so here is another example.

Once the entire block has been cut out I had to rinse it to wash away any crumbs left from carving. Make sure it's completely dry before you use it.

Time to apply ink. Note: in this tutorial I used a light cardboard  to scoop the ink onto which wasn't a good idea as it seemed to absorb the ink ( it's best to scoop the ink onto a plastic plate or a glass surface).

I rolled the brayer through the ink until the brayer was evenly coated. Then I rolled the brayer across the surface of my lino stamp a few times to make sure it's coated evenly.

 
I turned the lino upside down and pressed it firmly all areas onto a fabric giving it a few seconds to let the ink soak into the surface.

Have you noticed that each print looks different? Not only depending on fabrics used as surface but also how much strenght I use when pressing a stamp onto it.

Note: All the equipment used has to be washed straightaway.

 

  I then cut out the flowers from all different fabrics and used them to embellish a bag which I made myself. You can see it below^_^

I've used free- hand sewing technique to embroider around the lines of my stamped flowers to give them more depth.
